Get ready for flights to the dark side of the moon, or further, to places where no man has gone before. The Los Angeles Times reports that Boeing has entered a deal with a private spaceflight marketing firm, Space Adventures based in Virginia, to ferry astronauts and paying passengers together. No one is saying just how that's going to work but Boeing has proclaimed its intentions to carve out a niche in human space commerce.
Will it be profitable? The first space tourist was California multimillionaire Denis Tito who paid $20 million for the ride. Just how many would have that sort of spare change after the financial crisis is anyone's guess.
Of course, this sort of deal will put Boeing in competition with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic which, according to this report, is selling flights at $200,000 a pop.
Maybe there is a market for it. America is supposed to be full of space cadets.
