Air travel has taken a hammering in this global financial bloodbath. International Air Traffic Association figures show a steep decline in passenger numbers.
So it's not surprising to read the news report that british Airways has just got rid of first class. In hard times, there's less demand for first class and business class travel. With BA chief executive Willie Walsh saying the business will review the configuration of all seating, you can bet this will be a mroe or less permanent change.
When you think about it, first class travel belonged to another era in jet travel, well before the days of cheap flights and cut throat competition. So it's not just about the recession, it's about a deeper structural shift in the trvel industry.
We are likely to see other airlines doing the same thing.
