Every now and then, you come across a story that really leaves you wondering about the shameless stupidity that's allowed to fester away in parts of America. Like this one, telling us that the new British film on Charles Darwin Creation can't get a distribution deal in America because US distributors say it would create such an uproar.
"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules,'' the film's producer Jeremy Thomas told the Daily Mail.
According to the Daily Mail, the Christian movie review website movieguide.org has described Darwin as "a racist, a bigot and a 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder." It's also claimed that his "half-baked theory" influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and generic engineering."
It's not like the distributors are out on a limb either. According to a Gallup poll , only four out of 10 Americans say they believe in the theory of evolution (and this is from a country now sending off its young men to die in Afghanistan in the fight against religious fundamentalism).
And yet, America has led the way in other area like mapping the human genome and drug research. Go figure! This is alarming stuff. If you want, you can check out the trailer of the film here:
