What does corporate responsibility mean for most companies? Apparently, it's all about the size of the checkbook.

According to a global study, 2007 Corporate Social Responsibility: United States, Australia, India, China, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, conducted among HR professionals working around the world, most organizations try to show they are good citizen and ethical by donating to charities.

But at the same time, they are less focused on other areas that are usually deemed to be examples of good corporate social responsibility.

Which means they are less focused on monitoring labor standards in the supply chain, or evaluating the impact their operations on the environment. Nor are they that prepared to support community organizations through volunteering programs, align their products and services with a particular cause or assess the impact their business has on society.

Frankly, checkbook corporate responsibility is not corporate responsibility at all. It's public relations. Real corporate responsibility means following 10 rules that I have set out here.
