With plans for a special summit on the need to promote diversity in law firms, the question needs to be asked about how much discrimination goes in the legal world.

With that in mind, we turn to a news report of a Haitianlinks woman, Caroline Memnon, suing one of the world's largest law firms, Clifford Chance, for $75 million. Memnon, who is black, claims that Clifford Chance only hired her for window dressing and fired her when she complained about it. She also claims that after the firm got rid of her in 2002, it then blacklisted her so that she could not get further employment. According to her lawsuit, several interviews with prospective employers were "mysteriously cancelled at the last minute and promises of employment at other New York law firms never materialized."

For the record, Clifford Chance says the case is without merit. The firm says it will be contesting the case.
