Climate change and companies

Further evidence that businesses and politicians are struggling to come up up with a way of dealing with climate change and the risk it presents to to society, and business.
First, we have the International Herald Tribune telling us about a report to European leaders to get ready for a massive inflow of migration from the Middle East and Africa, two regions vulnerable to the pressure of climate change, by 2020. And to be prepared for political instability, strains on food and water supplies and more natural disasters.
The the McKinsey Quarterly shows that executives see climate change as both a risk and an opportunity, but they are not really doing anything about it. More than one in three said their companies never considered climate change when formulating strategy. Only 44 percent of CEOs, for said that climate change was not a significant item on their agendas. Further, many respondents reported that their companies considered climate change only occasionally at best when managing corporate reputation and brands, developing new products. Climate change didn't even seem to come into the equation when they were managing environmental issues. And more than 70 per cent said their companies did not include formal targets related to climate change in the performance reviews of relevant executives. All of which suggests these companies are not serious about the issue. Miost companies did not even have emission targets.
Still, 29 per cent said their companies currently emphasized climate change more than most other trends. The ones who said that tended to be executives from energy companies, publicly owned companies, and organizations with revenues greater than $1 billion.
