Climate change: the worst case scenario is here

Earlier this month, I did a blog entry suggesting that we should not expect any deal to come out of Copenhagen at the end of this year to stop climate change.

Now more alarmingly, we have the Copenhagen Climate Change Congress telling us that the worst case scenarios for climate change are already happening.

"Recent observations confirm that, given high rates of observed emissions, the worst-case IPCC scenario trajectories (or even worse) are being realised. For many key parameters, the climate system is already moving beyond the patterns of natural variability within which our society and economy have developed and thrived. These parameters include global mean surface temperature, sea-level rise, ocean and ice sheet dynamics, ocean acidification, and extreme climatic events. There is a significant risk that many of the trends will accelerate, leading to an increasing risk of abrupt or irreversible climatic shifts."

The missive puts pressure on business and also on the Obama administration to force through through global-warming laws prior to the Copenhagen meeting. With the battle lines already being drawn in the US over this, it's going to be a tough one.
