Conrad Black might be behind bars but the saga continues to unfold. CFO.com reports that Hollinger, the old holding company that used to control his newspaper empire, has settled a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit alleging it fraudulently diverted cash from the entity now known as the Sun-Times Group. Hollinger has agreed to disgorge $21.3 million in alleged improperly diverted money but that's all academic. No cash will change hands because Hollinger is being credited on a dollar-to-dollar basis with the $21.3 million it paid to settle the lawsuit brought against it by Sun-Times Media Group.
And as part of the deal, Hollinger relinquishes control of Sun-Times, reports Editor & Publisher.
Meanwhile, all reports indicate that Conrad Black is settling down to life in the slammer. Sentenced to six and a half years, he says he is adjusting. "I am doing fine. This is a safe and civilized place and I don't anticipate any difficulty,'' he told the media in an email as reported here.
Now, exactly how he managed to send the email remains a mystery.
But assuming he keeps some sort of access, one thing's certain - it will ensure he should continue to get plenty of media attention for the next six years or so. But then, it might be shorter. His lawyers claim he might be out in 29 months time, citing his "deep reservoir of kindness". Judge Amy St Eve must have missed that.
