While all eyes are on Copenhagen you have to really start what kind of bad deal it will produce. Already we have a disturbing report showing that the world’s richest nations have put together a secret plan that completely dismantles the Kyoto Protocol principle that the rich nations should cut back on emissions, weakens the role of the United Nations and hands over control to the rich man’s club at the World Bank.
Worse still, the so called “Danish text” screws the world’s poorest nations by forcing them to agree to emission cuts that were not part of the original agreement. It prohibits developing countries from emitting more than 1.44 tonnes of carbon per person by 2050, but, get this, allows rich countries to emit 2.67 tonnes.
This is just appalling and hardly surprising with other reports the fossil fuel industry has sent in lobbyists to get into the ear of the world’s political leaders and muscle up their own cozy little deal.
All this raises a number of concerns. First, we’re not going to get any sort of agreement at Copenhagen unless the developing nations, led by China and India, are on board. And that’s not going to happen when you have these sorts of secret deals being formulated by the world’s richest countries. The other concern is why the document was leaked. That was done either to stop the deal going ahead, by creating so much outrage. Alternatively, it could have been leaked to sabotage Copenhagen. Watch this space.
