President Barack Obama says the US withdrawal from Afghanistan could begin as early as July 2011, provided the Afghanistan security forces are ready, but you can bet the rest of the country won't be.
The place is totally corrupt and a United Nations report says the corruption is creating support for the Taliban.
According to the report, one Afghan out of two has had pay a kickback to a government official. Afghans paid out $2.5 billion in bribes, the equivalent of 23% of that country's GDP and 25% of Afghans had to pay bribes to police and local officials over the past year.
The report says this has created a good recruiting ground for the Taliban. "With the very foundation of traditional Afghan justice (administered by teh village shura ) weakened, the recourse to more violent forms of rertribution (the Taliban sharia) becomes treacherously appealing."
Because at least the Taliban aren't stealing from you, or bleeding you dry.
Obviously until that corruption is fixed, Afghanistan will remain terminal and the war unwinnable.
