Directors and donations

Following the uproar over the scandals linking corrupt to corrupt politicians, and corporate money finding its way into the pockets of both parties, company directors say they want disclosure. But closer examination shows that's just rhetoric. Deep down, they don't want more transparency.

According to a Center for Political Accountability survey, company directors remain clueless about campaign finance rules and their own company policies. And that's a worrying sign with the 2008 election cycle showing all signs that spending records will be exceeded.

According to the survey, 75 per cent of directors said they were familiar with campaign finance laws and 86 per cent said they were familiar with their company policies. But when questioned further, their responses showed they did not really know that much.

Just as alarmingly, fewer than half believed that companies should disclose donations on their websites. Which would make it more difficult for anyone trying to gather data on a corporation's political spending.

All of which company directors are not really that interested in coming clean and are still intent on keeping politicians in their pockets.
