Easter egg and flower sales boom in recession

Despite the global recession, flower sales and Easter baskets are doing great business.

The Economist reports that while overall flower sales are down slightly, selling tulips is a thriving business. Roses aren't doing too bad either. The Israel Flower Growers Association has reported a 5% to 10% rise in flower sales in the lead up to Passover and Easter. While there is a drop off in sales on more expensive items, people won't give up buying flowers. Anything that would make them feel better.

A similar story with Easter eggs and Easter baskets with Cadbury, Hershey's, Mars, and Nestle all reporting an increase in sales and reports here and here that chocolate is defying the economic gloom.

In tough times, people will turn to anything that makes them forget how hard things are and cheers them up. Flowers and chocolates are a booming business in a recession.
