Exxon Mobil lobbies on climate change

Energy companies are spending millions lobbying on climate change and when you're the biggest oil producer, you will be paying more to buy the politicians.

Which is why it's not surprising to read reports that Exxon Mobil spent more on Washington lobbying during the first half of the year than all clean-energy companies combined.

According to that report, Exxon Mobil spent $14.9 million lobbying compared with the $12.1 million laid out by companies that make solar panels or wind turbines to generate electricity.

All up, oil and gas companies spent $82.2 million on lobbying.

As the Centre for Responsive Politics points out in its blog, only the pharmaceutical and health care product companies and insurers spent more on lobbying in the second quarter than the oil and gas industry. We can expect lobbying by Big Oil to continue to increase as more climate change legislation comes up.
