Facebook has announced in its developer's blog that it is cracking down on scammers. It's not before time, given the publicity and uproar.
We've had instances like phishing campaigns where users are robbed of their Facebook user names and passwords, we've had instances where users have been fooled into revealing their passwords and downloading a Trojan that steals financial data. And the list goes on.
So while Facebook isn't saying it, the response seems to be very much about damage control following all the bad news stories.
And in the blog post, Facebook's Nick Gianos virtually concedes it's an uphill battle. Gianos writes: "This battle is not new and it’s far from over. We faced stimulus scam ads on our own system earlier this year and pushed them off the site with rigorous enforcement. We did the same months later when deceptive ads from third-party ad networks appeared in applications. We’re doing that again now as we see them appear in the form of offers."
But even while that's going on, there are now concerns about people getting scammed by Facebook games like Farmville which is being targeted by unscrupulous advertisers luring people into phishing scams.
Facebook's crackdown on scams is just beginning. But clearly, there is a lot work to do and we are just as likely to be here in a few weeks time talking about the same thing.
