Facebook claims 10-fold increase in advertising

Facebook reckons its advertisers have increased their spending 10 fold over the last year. Not that we know for sure, Facebook is a private company so it doesn't have the same disclosure obligations. Still, the claims from the company's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg are interesting because the ad prices have not increased. The apparent increase has been driven by the growth of users which has now crossed the 500 million mark and which would make Facebook the third biggest country after China and India.

Facebook in the meantime has put off any prospect of the company floating until 2012, ostensibly to give the company more time for growth.

Delaying the IPO is hardly surprising given the concerns about Facebook and breaches of privacy and that weird lawsuit from someone who claims he owns 84% of the social networking site and who sued after he was arrested for fraud.

Until those matters are sorted out, there can be no float. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's inimitable style would also be called into question if the company listed. That's why it's likely to stay private for some years.
