How multicultural is Facebook? Very, according to Facebook. But Facebook's methodology sucks. It's all about damage control following the latest controversies.
Facebook, reeling from its latest privacy disaster, has released its latest study into the demographics of its users, purportedly showing that the site is not just for Whites and Asians anymore. There are more Blacks and Hispanics using it.
How did they reach this conclusion? It uses US census results which go by people's last name.
You would have to say that's not the most accurate measure. It's not exactly like Facebook asks every user to identify their ethnicity. Still, as a piece of damage control, it might work as a nice piece of publicity. Just take it with a bag or two of salt.
