Facebook is definitely getting a bit too big for its own boots.
Now we have Wired telling us that the social networking site is suing an online community of teachers, Teachbook, for trademark infringement. Yes, it's the book part of the name that has got Facebook riled.
The ubergizomo blog makes the excellent point that Facebook has taken a leaf out of Apple's book. Apple has gone after sites and companies that use "pod" as a suffix in an attempt to protect its iPod trademark.
Jennifer van Grove at Mashable says things might not go that well for the little guy here because the lawsuit alleges that Teachbook is trying to profit from the Facebook name. And Facebook alleges that Teachbook could set a precedent.
Facebook claims in its lawsuit: "If others could freely use 'generic plus BOOK' marks for online networking services targeted to that particular generic category of individuals, the suffix BOOK could become a generic term for 'online community/networking services' or 'social networking services'."
At the same time, if the lawsuit succeeds it will create a legal precedent for Facebook.
