Ethical consumerism is on the rise. A new study by London-based Datamonitor, reported here, has found that Fair-trade sales across Europe, the US, Australia & New Zealand and Japan have experienced double digit growth since 2002. Datamonitor is predicting growth of 15.7 percent between 2007 and 2012.
This trend will continue to grow as global warming keeps bringing on more natural disasters. The increased awareness will lead to more demand.
At the moment, beverages account for the largest share of fair-trade product sales but it will be fascinating to watch what other products are brought into the mix.

A big reason that consumers are turning to fair trade products is that we are increasingly skeptical about the wholesomeness of other products on the market. The US has seen pet food and toy scandals in the last few months. Exposes have been done concerning sweatshop-manufactured jeans sold in major chain stores. To avoid those problems, I turn to fair trade products whenever I can. I won't use my money to support human or environmental degradation.
