Foxconn's worker rallies

The iPhone killer factory is in deep trouble. Earlier this year, I did a blog entry looking at the suicides at the Taiwan owned Foxconn plant which manufactures the Mac mini, the iPod, the iPad, and the iPhone for Apple. Foxconn is Apple's biggest manufacturer in China.

Now the company has been forced to hold an anti-suicide rally of its workers, giving them outfits that range from traditional Chinese garb to superhero costumes. It's the equivalent of a company picnic, all designed to raise morale of its workforce.

But Foxconn concedes that some of its workers will continue to top themselves. At the same time, it has removed the nets that stopped employees from killing themselves, claiming its workers just had to develop more mental strength.

Holding picnics and dressing up workers as superheroes is not going to solve the problem. The only way to stop employees killing themselves is to treat them like human beings.
