Ryanair, the airline that has a reputation for treating its passengers like crap, even making them pay when they want to go to the toilet, has no plans to become carbon neutral. In fact, it's chief executive Michael O'Leary has described global warming as a total crock.
In this interview in the Irish Independent, O'Leary didn't mince his words.
"Do I believe there is global warming? No, I believe it's all a load of bullshit. But it's amazing the way the whole fucking eco-warriors and the media have changed. It used to be global warming, but now, when global temperatures haven't risen in the past 12 years, they say 'climate change' "
He says scientists have made the whole thing up. "The scientific community has nearly always been wrong in history anyway. In the Middle Ages, they were going to excommunicate Galileo because the entire scientific community said the Earth was flat… I mean, it is absolutely bizarre that the people who can't tell us what the fucking weather is next Tuesday can predict with absolute precision what the fucking global temperatures will be in 100 years' time. It's horseshit.".
He also attacked the United Nations as "one of the world's most useless organisations", its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore as someone who "couldn't even get fucking re-elected" after a boom.
The US Aerospace Industries Association is pushing plans to help the aviation industry reduce its emissions and Cathay Pacific Airways has announced it wants to reduce its emissions by 50% by 2050 but you can bet O'Leary will have none of that.
Of course, running an airline means he has a vested interest. Not that there is anything new in what he is saying. It's the same sort of stuff that's been peddled by climate change deniers right around the world, funded by oil companies which also have a vested interest.
