Google moves into pay-per-view

Google continues to make strides in the area of media with the Financial Times reporting that it's now negotiating with Hollywood's leading movie studios to launch a global pay-per-view video service on its YouTube site by the end of this year. That will put it into direct competition with Apple which is also seeking to dominate digital distribution of film and TV. The race is on! That will be a game changer for YouTube which has millions of users but which is mostly known for its user generated content.

Apart from Apple, the move will put Google in competition with Hulu, Netflix and Amazon.

But Apple is not going to take that lying down. As reported here, there is talk that Apple is in talks with News Corp to create a deal where users will be able to rent TV programs for $0.99. And Apple TV is likely to be rebranded iTV.

This space, the battle for the eyeballs, will be one to watch. TV and movies will be one of the most fiercely contested areas for business.
