Can search engines predict economic trends? Yes they can, according to a new study which finds that the frequency with which people use certain phrases can predict trends like retail sales figures, car sales and house sales data. And because sites like Google are updated constantly, we can get these figures before they are officially released.
According to The Economist , the application could have wide use.
That said, some of the categories Google searches might not be that clear cut. Like, for example, home financing and insurance.
Still, it does point to some interesting trends that might make the future a little clearer, or at least bits of it.
