In the lead up to Copenhagen, we have alarming news that Greenland's ice sheets are melting at an accelerating rate. According to the report, Greenland lost an estimated 1500 gigatons (one gigaton is equal to 1 billion tons) of ice from the year 2000 to 2008 and if it does lose all its ice, seas will rise seven meters.
Combine that with a new University of Colorado at Boulder study showing that Antarctic is also melting at a faster rate and we have trouble.
Scientists say the melting ice caps are triggering earth quakes. The rising seas would endanger coastal cities in the region and threaten marine life and coral reefs, damaging tourism, fishing and other industries.
This is why Copenhagen is so important. The time to act is now.
