Internet pornography to get its own red light district

So it looks like the Internet is about to get its own area for adult entertainment websites, called the dot-XXX domain. As reported here, ICANN, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the creation and distribution of web addresses has just approved a special .xxx domain name.

Specialists have told the Financial Times there could be as many as 500,000 addresses ready to go. So far, they insist child pornography will be banned from this domain space.

As the Guardian explains, it might actually backfire on the pornography industry. We can expect to see conservative members of the US Congress lobby to confine all sex sites to that domain, in effect turning it into a smut ghetto.

Then there is the question of what gets confined to that space. With pressure from the more conservative politicians, we could see topics like homosexuality restricted to the xxx space.

It's an issue that could get plenty of focus from freedom of speech advocates in the coming weeks.
