Bad actor Wesley Snipes has made his name beating up terrorists, vampires and cops but he's no match for the Internal Revenue Service.
Today, he has been sent to jail for three years for failing to pay $15.6 million in income taxes over six years, hiding millions of dollars in offshore accounts and threatening US government employees, reports Bloomberg. Snipes' lawyers say they will appeal but it's not looking good.
So who is going to get the vampires now? More to the point, what's he going to do once he is inside the slammer? The Movies Blog has come up with 10 films that might give him some tips, including The Rock, The Shawshank Redemption and Escape from New York.
And what to make of the sentence? The US Justice Department says it's a wake-up call for would-be tax defiers.
But columnist Sandy Sand says it's harsh for a misdemeanor, an over-reaction that's in effect resurrecting debtor's prison. "Where's the justice, fairness or sanity when government officials turn a blind eye to all their buddies who head up giant corporations that are based in the United States that have offshore addresses to avoid paying billions in taxes," writes Sand. "Somewhere I heard that was illegal. If that isn't tax evasion, I don't know what is."
But the taxingmatter blog says it's only fair and well-deserved. "Any other resolution of this case would have made a mockery of justice. A poor guy who swipes a piece of pizza from a kid in California can go to jail for life under California's ridiculously harsh criminal "three strikes and you're out" law, but wealthy elites who mock the nation's tax laws often get off with nothing but a slap on the wrist, if that. If all they do is pay their back due taxes and interest, even with a penalty, they may come out ahead, under time value of money principles. Snipes deserves jail. It's good that he got what he deserves."

Wesley Snipes has been sent to jail for three years for tax evasion. What signal does that send other would-be tax defiers? How will Snipes fill his time in jail? And who’s going to kill the vampires now?
