Lockerbie bomber freed for trade deals

You have got to hand it to the Poms when it comes to putting self-interest above principle with the BBC reporting that the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al Megrahi was linked to trade deals. The deal will give a massive boost for trade between the United Kingdom and Libya.

The New York Times reports that it opens the way for British companies to pursue multi-billion oil deals with Libya and that British executives had been pushing for a prisoner transfer treaty with Libya that would allow this to happen.

And as Sky News reports, the deal will clear the way for more trade between Britain and Libya, and not just in oil. Sky News reports: "Aside from fossil fuels, the UK's Trade and Investment body says opportunities occur in a wide range of industries. These include construction, education, financial and legal services, telecommunications and healthcare though the agency does warn the Libyan market can be a tough one to crack for new entrants. This is because historical ties and trade relations count for a lot in the desert nation."

There is definitely a pattern here. Remember the bribery deals involving BAE and Saudi Arabia that Britain refused to investigate? It's something I covered many times, including here and here.

And the Poms call us cynical!!
