Now that he has been sentenced to 150 years, Bernard Madoff has hired a prison consultant, Herb Hoelter, to help find him the best possible jail. But as The Times reports, Hoelter will have his work cut out because 150 years means he has next to no hope of being sent to a low or medium high-security prison like other white collar criminals.
Another prison consultant, Larry Levine, who actually turned down work for Madoff, has told reporters that the fraudster is seen in the same category as child molesters.
His advice to Madoff is pretty simple: "He needs to keep his mouth shut, his ears open, show respect, humble himself. He needs to wipe that arrogant smile off his face, and he should not trust anybody where he's at because the institutions are loaded with informants and they would like nothing better than to find something out on Bernie to trade to the FBI to use as a tool to get time off on their own sentence ... He needs to maintain high visibility and refrain from putting himself in a situation where he'd be compromised. Don't engage in gambling, don't borrow anything from anybody, don't lie, don't tell on anybody."
Given that he'll be mixing with murderers and rapists, and exposed to white supremacist gangs with a hatred of Jews, Madoff will need all the help he can get.
