Mafia goes green

Mafia goes green

You have to hand it to the mafia. They can find all sorts of brilliant ways to launder their money.

The Guardian reports that Mafia is investing its dirty money in wind and solar energy companies in Sicily. A Sicilian businessman Vito Nicastri, otherwise known as the Lord of The Wind, is making these investments which have since been confiscated. Nicastri has links to the Sicilian mafia and he has been accused exploiting Italy's high feed-in tariffs and poor government oversight to create new companies and recycle dirty cash

Sicily is the perfect place for it too. As Leon Kaye at Triple Pundit says, the place already has 30 wind farms with another 60 under way.

Still, you would have to say that it's better the mafia puts their money into renewable energy than investing instead in drugs, gambling or prostitution. If it tackles climate change, who cares?
