Next world war could be in cyberspace

Will World War III be a cyber war? Or has it begun already?

That's the warning from the International Telecommunications Union, according to this report.

ITU secretary general Hamadoun Toure says countries are vulnerable because are now so dependent on technology for commerce, finance and food distribution. "The next world war could happen in cyberspace and that would be a catastrophe. We have to make sure that all countries understand that in that war, there is no such thing as a superpower. Loss of vital networks would quickly cripple any nation, and none is immune to cyberattack."

It could already be happening. Eric Chabrow at the Government Information Security blog runs an interview with US Army Lieutenant Colonel Gregory Conti, an academy computer science professor at the U.S. Military Academy where he warns it's started already. "I personally believe – cyberwarfare cold war, for sure – a full-out cyberwarfare war is ongoing now. Major companies that are being attacked aren't really talking about it, but it's going on. Information is being stolen, machines compromised; attacks are occurring on an incredible scale right now."

So the hacking attacks on companies now are just a taste of things to come.
