Nintendo declares war on Apple

Nintendo has declared war on Apple. It's a sign. Video software and hardware players like Nintendo might be on the way out as the gaming industry is being turned on its head.

Earlier this month, Nintendo posted a decline in its profits, with the company blaming the figures on a price reduction on Wii hardware, fewer strong Wii software titles in the first half and appreciation of the yen.

Now Nintendo has come out and said it's plan is to destroy Apple. The Times reports that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told executives to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the "enemy of the future".

That's some ask. Beating Apple will not be easy and Nintendo will have to get its act together. Scott Stein at CNET News says Nintendo will have to do a whole heap of different things, like for example, improve storage, allow downloaded games to be transferred to new devices and encourage better indie development, pretty much as Apple has done.

All this points to a big problem for mainstream video hardware and software players like Nintendo. The combination of free and cheap games on mobile devices, the rise of social networking games on sites like Facebook, expensive console games, and the aging nature of console hardware means they are facing a grim future. Nintendo obviously realizes that. This is why it has declared war on Apple. This could be a fight to the death.
