No accounting for Giuliani

The fallout from Rudy Giuliani's "Shaglinks Fund", revealed last week in Politico.com concerning those mysterious and buried costs surrounding his extramarital affair with Judith Nathan when he was mayor of New York, continues.

As it turned out, The Shag Fund paid for the 11 tryst visits to Hamptons, for hotel and other expenses for mayoral aides, quite apart from the security detail, Nathan's NYPD-chauffeured trips (without Rudy) to visit her parents in Pennsylvania, 130 miles outside the city, NYPD detectives and city-owned undercover Dodge to drive Nathan around the city, NYPD detectives and city-owned undercover Dodge to drive Nathan's friends and family around the city even when she wasn't in the car, NYPD security detail for Nathan, and NYPD cops to walk Nathan's dog.

Politico.com revealed that the mayor's office refused to explain the accounting to city auditors, citing "security".

There are more revelations of accounting gimmicks from TPM Muckraker. Indeed, while Giuliani is always citing facts and figures as part of his campaign, the New York Times reveals that the statistics don't always measure up.

As you would expect, the candidate is denying any accounting wrongdoing.

But as Steve Benen's Carpetbagger Report makes clear, Giuliani's explanations can be boiled down to 10 excuses - the story "isn't true", the premise of the story isn't true, this is "old news", Giuliani was trying to help the NYPD, "we've already explained it", this is a "hit job", the money was reimbursed, everybody does it, everything was "transparent", there was no cover-up - and not one of them stacks up.
