Noose closes on Wikileaks

The United States administration, the government of the land of the free, wants to arrest Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The Daily Beast reports that the US Government is pressing Britain, Germany, Australia, and other allies to bring criminal charges against Assange for his Afghan war leaks.

But the most important place here is Sweden where Wikileaks operates a number of critical internet servers. Sweden has some of the best media protection laws in Europe and has been a safe haven for Assange's site. Swedish law provides legal protection against any official inquiry into journalists' sources and if a source's identity is identified without permission, the law has been broken and criminal charges could follow.

The problem for Assange is that Sweden might not be that safe. A deputy to Sweden's Chancellor of Justice has told Swedish newspapers that Wikileaks is vulnerable because it has no license to produce material there. Just having a server in Sweden does not guarantee legal protection.

The only way Assange will be able to protect his site would be to do some sort of deal with a licensed Swedish publisher who would have the full protection of Swedish law. Doing that without compromising the integrity of Wikileaks might be a tall order.
