Oil industry plans grass roots lobbying campaign on climate change

Check this report how the oil industry, led by the American Petroleum Institute (API) plans to launch a grass roots type campaign of "Energy Citizen" rallies to derail Barack Obama's climate change strategy, organizing rallies by companies in manufacturing, farming and oil. They would send out employees to protest against any laws to control climate change. The strategy is contained in a leaked email obtained by Greenpeace.

But can the oil industry keep it up? Will it work? The Financial Times reports that the oil industry is all over the place on this with Shell questioning the strategy. It has told the newspaper that tackling climate change is part of its pro-growth strategy. Exxon Mobil, the other big member of the API, would disagree.

It's hard to say how effective the campaign will be. But one thing's for sure: if the oil industry struggles to present a united front, its lobbying will be as good as destroyed.
