Much has been said about using public transport to solve climate change. Basically, the argument goes that taking a train or bus produces fewer greenhouse gases than driving.
But now a new study, reported here, suggests that not be the case. According to scientists, there are hidden emissions from the oil, gas or coal used to power the public transport. If they use dirty fossil fuels, it's not that effective to stop global warming.
The scientists also maintain that a lot of it depends on usage. A train carriage that's fully occupied produces less greenhouse gas.
Clearly, climate change is no easy force to dispel. There are a whole lot of hidden variables that need to be taken into account by town planners, engineers and politicians.
