On Friday, I did a blog entry looking at a case starting in the Supreme Court this coming week questioning whether the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) is constitutional. If the case gets up, it could end Sarbanes Oxley.
But the PCAOB seems confident it will survive and with it, Sarbanes Oxley. That explains why the PCAOB seeking a 16% increase in its budget to more than $183 million.
PCAOB acting chairman Daniel Goelzer claims the economic climate has increased its work load. There are more areas to inspect, and haul accounting firms into line. The PCAOB is expecting more accounting firms will take it to court, so the extra money will be its fighting fund.
The only significance of this is that PCAOB is showing no signs of buckling under. Asking for more money, and its arguments that its work has become more significant because of the state of the economy, is a sign that it expects the Supremes will throw the plaintiff's case out of court.
Watch this space. This case will be fascinating.
