Mon Dieu, it could only happen in France.
French contestants in a French reality TV show, L'Ile de la Tentation (Temptation Island), have won a court case to get the same entitlements as employees with overtime payments and other benefits. As the BBC reports, that the court felt that the effort the contestants put into the show constituted hard work. The show follows couples who are separated on a tropical island where single people to try to seduce them. Yeah, very French.
The court maintained it was all part of their employment and that when they were being tested by the opposite sex, they were actually working hard. The Cour de Cassation said: ""Temptation Island constitutes a job and therefore justifies an employment contract. Tempting a person of the opposite sex requires concentration and attention."
The TV station says this will ruin reality TV in France. But what's more interested is whether that sort of ruling would be taken up in other countries. Or is it just a French thing?
