corporate governance
by leon on February 20, 2008

Late last year, I did a blog entry on how media mogul Rupert Murdoch was rewriting the rules of corporate governance by appointing Natalie Bancroft, a 27-year old opera singer with little experience in journalism and business to the board of his media empire, News Corporation. Basically, she is being put there to represent the Bancroft family who sold out of Dow Jones and handed Murdoch control of the Wall Street Journal. You wouldn't imagine News Corp shareholders would be that thrilled with the appointment.
Now young Natalie tries to explain why she is suited her new role in the latest edition of Portfolio.com. And she says she wants to set the record straight.
"There's been people saying, 'She's going to be a potted plant and a pushover','' she says. "The last thing I am is a pushover. I'm not just some idiotic girl in pigtails yodeling."
Maybe, but it will be fascinating to see how someone so young with no business experience will deal with Rupert Murdoch who is a notoriously hands-on business leader.
Read it and weep.
