corporate governance

Last week, I did a blog entry talking about the problems charities and other non-profit agencies face with governance.
Now a new book Forces for Good by Leslie Crutchfield and Heather McLeod Grant details six ways non-profits can become more effective. I haven't read the book yet but I have just ordered it after reading the write-up in The Economist.
The six recommended paths of action are:
Advocate and serve: Delivering a service is not enough. You also need to advocate political action.
Make markets work: Work with market forces to generate income where and work with with for-profit businesses.
Inspire evangelists: Turn Volunteers into evangelists and strong communities who go out promoting your cause.
Work with other non-profits: Share your wealth, expertise and talent so that you can have maximum results and impact.
Master the art of adaptation: Be prepared to adapt and modify when conditions change.
Share leadership: Make sure it's spread through the organization so that things don't collapse when people leave. As they do.
