Spies to monitor companies

Big Brother is coming. The Wall Street Journal reports that the spy agency the National Security Agency plans to monitor US companies and government agencies that operate critical infrastructure, including electricity grids and nuclear power plants. It's all to stop critical infrastructure such as the electricity grid and nuclear-power plants coming under cyber attack.

According to the WSJ, it's all part of the so-called Perfect Citizen program. Even the name Perfect Citizen sounds like something out of George Orwell.

Under this program, the NSA would insert sensors in computer networks that would be programmed to alert officials to activity that could portend a cyberattack.

Letting a spy agency monitor operations is troubling because these agencies are not normal security companies. And while the NSA would have the most sophisticated technical expertise on cybersecurity of any government agency, handing it over to the spooks would erode trust because it would have to be done in a transparent way. That mission cannot rest with the NSA.
