More reports confirming the way the recession is destroying, quite literally, the lives of so many people with news that the rate of suicides is on the rise as people weight up the cost of the recession with soaring unemployment and home foreclosures. According to one psychology professor quoted in this piece, people who have lost jobs kill themselves two times to four times more as those who are employed.
It's likely to be a trend felt around the world with reports coming out Ireland that there has been a 43% increase in the number of suicides recorded during the first three months of this financial year.
What that says is that with the economic downturn, governments around the world will need to spend more on health care and preventative medicine.
