New British Prime Minister David Cameron should thank his lucky stars that he was not in Pennsylvania when he used the word "twat" in a radio interview last year. So should other swearing politicians like Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Britain's former PM Tony Blair, and London mayor Boris Johnson who have either dropped the s or f bombs in public. You can read about them here.
And then of course there's US vice president Joe Biden when he dropped the old Anglo-Saxon word to his boss, telling him the health care reform legislation was a "big f***ing deal. You can check it out here.
And yes, it's a good thing Biden wasn't in Pennsylvania because according to the law.com site, police there routinely treat swearing as a crime.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania has filed lawsuits on behalf of Pennsylvania residents who say they were issued citations for disorderly conduct for yelling swear words in traffic disputes. According to the law suit, there was one case where a pizza delivery man double parked his car and swore at the police officer who wrote him out a ticket. The pizza man was charged with disorderly conduct for use of obscenity, arrested and thrown in jail. He was later found not guilty by a district magistrate, after taking the day off without pay to defend himself.
Maybe the cops in Pennsylvania don't have anything else to do with their time. Maybe the Pennsylvania laws are in breach of the First Amendment enshrining freedom of speech, even if it has the F word.
