The news about swine flu is getting grimmer and grimmer.
First, we have reports of the US Food and Drug Administration warning that swine flue vaccine will not provide 100% protection. That's followed up by Forbes reporting that swine flu could stop any chance of a recovery in the appalling British economy. Swine flu could shrink the British economy by a massive 7.5% with businesses being left without employees, consumers spending less on goods, and people staying away from public places to avoid infection.
So amidst all this gloom, isn't it reassuring to read that swine flu could deliver some of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies, like GlaxoSmithKline which produces Relenza, Roche which sells Tamiflu, SANOFI-Aventis, Novartis and Baxter with massive profits. The Financial Times reports that JP Morgan estimates that fresh antiviral sales could boost sales for GSK and Roche by another $1.8bn in the developed world, and up to $1.2bn from the developing world.
Another big winner from Swine Flu is Dominos Pizza with the Guardian reporting that Britain's biggest pizza delivery chain has had a 25% jump in first half profits as more people stay at home.
Are we looking at a swine flu led recovery?
