The app economy

The app economy

How big is the Apple iPhone economy?

Fast Company tells us, there are $200 million apps from App Store downloaded every month. Multiply that by 12 and the App Store is worth $2.4 billion which makes it bigger than the economy of Somalia and Eritrea. Not combined but soon it will be.

App Store customers buy more than one app per month, making it a bonanza and continuous revenue stream for Apple.

Gigaom reports that iPod touch owners download twice as many apps but whichever way you look at it, this represents a fascinating trend in times of recession. That's likely to increase with analysts predicting that smart phone shipments will surge 23% from 2008 to 2009 while hand set sales will go the other way.
