The Google-Verizon tiered Internet proposal

Say goodbye to the free Internet. Google and Verizon have issued a joint blog post detailing their plans for a tiered Internet system.

If you take a look at the fifth clause, the providers say they plan to "offer additional, differentiated online services, in addition to the Internet access and video services" which could include health care monitoring, advanced education and gaming.

The Financial Times reports that public interest groups have condemned it as discriminatory. According to the Stanford Review, it's downright dangerous because it means we will concede our rights as consumers.

"The current operating procedure of the internet is that all traffic is treated equal, my email to my mother has the same importance as your Skype chat with your best friend; the network is neutral to our web traffic. Under the Google-Verizon proposal, internet service providers would be allowed to determine which internet traffic is more important, my email could be transmitted before your Skype chat. For people who don't deal with time-sensitive transmission and people who don't use much bandwidth, this isn't really an issue, but it is an issue for the rest of us."

Providers have a right to charge for premium services but two big companies should not be telling us how the Internet should work.
