Dementia will be the next big epidemic with Science Daily reporting global research which shows that the number of people affected by Alzheimer's and dementia is growing at an epidemic pace. Let's be quite clear about this. It's a trend that will cripple the world's economies and health care systems. They simply won't be able to cope with the avalanche of cases. There will also be a massive shortage of people able to care for people suffering from Alzheimer's.
In Australia, there are reports of a study by Access Economics suggesting that the number of people with dementia will quadruple by 2050. This trend will be seen right around the world.
The ageing of the population is the main driver. Of course, one could argue that it might be contained if more people exercised more, got their blood pressure down and stopped smoking. But even then, health care systems around the world will be stretched to breaking point, causing enormous economic damage.
