Bernard Madoff is behind bars but his legacy continues. A crime of that size is not going to sink without trace.
First we have news that his director of operations Daniel Bonventre has been arrested for false filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and four counts of filing false federal-tax returns. He is the sixth person to be charged in this case, including Madoff, and there are likely to be a few more.
Then we have reports that Madoff's daughter-in-law and mother of his grandchildren, Stephanie Madoff, wants to change her name to Morgan. According to court documents, she wants to "avoid additional embarrassment, harassment and endangerment associated with the name 'Madoff' ".
And to round out the picture, Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos has written a book, as detailed in the Huffington Post, where he claims Madoff's crime is just the tip of the iceberg. Markopolos is also scathing of the Securities and Exchange Commission, claiming he gave the agency 20 cases of market timing, which proved that various companies had stolen billions of dollars from investors, to no avail.
The fallout from Madoff's crime will continue for years to come.
