Toyota, still recovering from the acceleration scandal over its faulty brake systems, has been playing dirty with the Washington Post reporting that the company had planned a campaign to undermine key witnesses testifying before Congress about the issue.
Toyota launched a negative media campaign, created primarily to debunk congressional testimony given by Sean Kane, a Massachusetts safety consultant and David Gilbert, an auto technology professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Toyota claims there is nothing untoward but lawmakers are demanding it hand over all the relevant documents.
This is hardly surprising when you consider what got Toyota into trouble in the first place. The negative PR campaign shows a company with a notorious culture of secrecy, which contributed to its current safety related recalls that had resulted in dozens of fatalities.
The latest developments tells us Toyota has not learned its lesson.
