In its search for profits, Twitter has finally opened the door for advertising.
As The Independent reports, it's a significant U turn with Biz Stone, one of Twitter's founders, revealing that the site had opted to "leave the door open for advertising".
br />This changes its terms of service for users. The terms now say: "Services may include advertisements, which may be targeted to the content or information on the services, queries made through the services, or other information."
This is totally different to Stone's take on advertising back in May when he said : ""There are no people at Twitter who know anything about advertising or work in advertising. So we don't have anyone there to make or take those calls."
The question is whether the ads will flow in. Twitter generates enormous traffic. But as some analysts have told The Times, some companies would be reluctant to juxtapose their brands with unpredictable, and potentially offensive, user-generated content.
So does that mean Twitter suddenly has to start hiring people who know something about advertising? And will it work? Watch this space.
