This Washington Post story shows how centuries of racial discrimination still shapes the lives of Americans with unemployment for 16-to-24-year-old black men reaching Great Depression proportions. It was at 34.5% in October which is three and a half times the rate for the general US population.
Not all of it is because of racial discrimination but certainly the legacy of it has created the problem with black communities facing challenges of sub-standard education, job training, and other infrastructure issues, as well as higher rates of poverty and incarceration. As economists say in the piece, the consequences of this will be long lasting as these people will struggle to catch up when the recovery comes.
Despite the election of Obama, America has a long way to go to undo the damage which will impact on its broader economy.
