Let's not just blame BP for the Gulf oil spill. Much of the problem was caused by collusion from the US government.
Lawrence Solomon, executive director Toronto based environmental campaign group Energy Probe has a piece where he points out that the Americans, because of their addiction to oil, have a particular talent for turning oil spill accidents into catastrophes and in this case knocked back offers from the Dutch government to clean up the mess. He says exactly the same thing happened years ago with the Exxon Valdez disaster, the Dutch ready to help were knocked back.
That might explain why the US government is stopping journalists and scientists from checking out the spill. As Jeremy Peters writes in the New York Times, they are being turned away not only by BP and its contractors, but by local law enforcement, the Coast Guard and government officials. The collusion runs deep.
If Solomon is right, more people will start blaming the Obama administration for the oil spill. What's happened in the Gulf is likely to become Obama's Katrina.
